Barcelona m'enamora
La Cubana
Do you live where you want to live?
Yes, until you find a better place, you are always fine where you are. But in the words of the song "No soy de aquí, ni soy de allá, / no tengo edad..." (I'm not from here or there/ I have no age).
Would you like to move? Why and where to?
As we are from a village, and at the same time we like the city, we need to live where we live: in the centre, really in the centre. It's vital.
Do you spend time in your neighbourhood and with your neighbours? Do you have the shops you need nearby (baker's, grocer's, dry cleaner's)
Yes, all the important things. Even a shop open 24 hours; because if not, with the kind of life we live, we wouldn't eat.
As well as doing your daily shopping (if you do it) do you have places and services for all your needs?
Every day less, because small shops have to close because of competition from the supermarkets, and then they are replaced by banks and savings banks.
Do you stroll around your own neighbourhood for pleasure or do you go elsewhere?
We are open, we like new experiences.
Which are your favourite cinemas, theatres and clubs?
It depends what's on. In shopkeeper's language, we say we go where they have good stock.
And which are your favourite restaurants, bars and cafés?
Any. As long as they don't smell bad when you go in. We are very scrupulous about "unknown smells".
Is there any public area where you like to go, to sit and chat?
For a chat, the best place is the street, because while you chat you notice and see things.
When you have to act as a guide for visitors, where do you take them?
It depends on the time we have. If we don't have much time, and the visitor doesn't mind, we put them on the tourist bus.
What is the most appropriate, funny or surprising adjective you have heard to describe Barcelona? Which one would you use?
At the time, we found the phrase "Barcelona posa't guapa" (Barcelona dresses up) appropriate and pleasant, although Barcelona now needs another good clean up, and needs to go to the hairdresser to cut its split ends.
Of where, between the sea and Tibidabo, do you have the most memories?
The Rambles, without doubt! It is the thermometer of the city, there where we have done everything: from meeting a first love, to losing a wallet.
Which is the best place (a park, a café, a seat in the city) to have a romantic date, or to be able to whisper sweet nothings to a loved one?
Any corner is good, but you can't stretch out. Age makes you want more comfort.
What colours or smells, when you see or smell them anywhere in the world, remind you immediately of Barcelona?
The colour has always been blue, and the smell. At the moment we don't know what to say; the smell of piss confuses the pituitary.
When you have had to leave the city for a while, what have you missed most?
The croissants from the bakery on the corner.
Which of the changes that have been made in the city recently are you happiest with?
Ah! Have there been changes? What are you referring to? The Forum, the Olympics of 92? Perhaps when the Sagrada Família is finished we will see a great change!
What don't you like, and what would you do to change it?
We wouldn't touch anything. We like it just the way it is. We would just clean it up.
Add anything you would like to say, and that we haven't asked.
Let's see. Seriously, we should say that we travel a lot, and when we are away, we miss Barcelona a lot, but to explain why is difficult. Maybe because we are from a village, and at the same time city rats.
