Barcelona m'enamora
Santi Millán
Do you live where you want to live?
Really, yes, I don't have any problems adapting to different places, but I prefer to stay in Barcelona.
Would you like to move? Why and where to?
Maybe my neighbourhood is no better than others, but I am happy here. Moving house is also very tiring. I try to keep away from physical activity as much as possible...
Do you spend time in your neighbourhood and with your neighbours? Do you have the shops you need nearby (baker's, grocer's, dry cleaner's)?
The shopkeepers have known me all my life. It's a special neighbourhood, full of life. People often say that it's like living in a village (until you see the price of flats and you quickly realise where you are)
As well as doing your daily shopping (if you do it) do you have places and services for all your needs?
I think that if I had any real needs, my neighbourhood wouldn't be able to cover all of them. Sometimes I have to go to the centre of the Eixample to buy something or do something: but I try not to need anything I have to work too hard for.
Do you stroll around your own neighbourhood for pleasure or do you go elsewhere?
I often cycle around the city, and I know no limits. One day I got lost and I ended up in Vic My neighbourhood is so small that you have to have flexible 'inter-neighbourhood' relations. The Born, Poblenou and the Eixample are all part of my domain.
Which are your favourite cinemas, theatres and clubs?
The Icària cinemas have earned their faithful audience, they are a luxury. I love the theatres in Barcelona, and each one has something special, maybe the Tívoli is my favourite. For nightlife I am completely fickle, I can't give you the names of any clubs where I am a regular.
And which are your favourite restaurants, bars and cafés?
All those which are not franchises, and especially those where you are received by a smile. I like Els Pescadors, in Poblenou, where you can get a good rice dish and good market food; I will certainly go back there.
Is there any public area where you like to go, to sit and chat?
Bogatell beach, the Parc de la Ciutadella, the railings on the corner of a street. Sometimes I feel that we are losing the idea of spending time outside, on the street. But, interestingly, foreign visitors seem to enjoy public spaces more than those who have been born and brought up here. Maybe we should learn from them?
When you have to act as a guide for visitors, where do you take them?
Walking around the Barri Gòtic is a sure-fire success.
What is the most appropriate, funny or surprising adjective you have heard to describe Barcelona? Which one would you use?
Barcelona Barcelona. Barcelona is now a very positive adjective.
Of where, between the sea and Tibidabo, do you have the most memories?
The Parc de la Ciutadella.
Which is the best place (a park, a café, a seat in the city) to have a romantic date, or to be able to whisper sweet nothings to a loved one?
A bus, the movement favours contact...
What colours or smells, when you see or smell them anywhere in the world, remind you immediately of Barcelona?
The sea.
When you have had to leave the city for a while, what have you missed most?
My friends.
Which of the changes that have been made in the city recently are you happiest with?
The Market of Santa Caterina, it was worth waiting for.
What don't you like, and what would you do to change it?
We should stop certain areas becoming theme parks. Recently some Japanese visitors who were walking through the Born asked me what time the shopping centre closed, and they were right in the middle of it!
Add anything you would like to say, and that we haven't asked.
Thank you.
