International Cooperation

How was this project born?

Barcelona fire service has always participated both nationally and internationally, in all those situations that have required humanitarian and material aid. Remember the Girona floods in the 60's, the Bilboa in 1982, the 1985 Mexico earthquake, the school coach accident in the River Orbigo, the earthquakes in Turkey, the Bosnian war and the list goes on.

As of now the district 11, Barcelona Solidaria, has been created at the request of Barcelona Council so that the Barcelona fire service participates in specific programmes. So all the equipment and lorries that are non-operational are put at the disposal of Barcelona Solidaria. In this way a continuous collaboration has begun, participating both in specific projects and personnel from the fire service as well as donating material.

The most note-worthy actions are:

  • 1998-99. Transport to Sarajevo: a collaboration between Barcelona Council and the fire service, lorries were sent to Sarajevo on two occasions.
  • 1998-99. Support and help to a refugee camp in Albania. Personnel from the fire service were sent.
  • 2001. Collaboration with the Official Nursing College of Barcelona on the "KENTAJA" project (children's home, among others).
  • 2001. Caravan of solidarity: between the Councils of Barcelona, Hospitalet, Sant Quirze and others. It is a co-operation with NGOs for health, schooling and development projects in rural areas in different regions in Senegal. Also health and education material was sent.
