
Throughout 2003, the GPS technology-based fleet management system was consolidated.
The Guardia Urbana took part in the 10th World Police and Fire Games, which ran from 27 July to 3 August 2003. The mounted unit put on a remarkable carrousel at the opening ceremony.
Superintendent Alfonso Vidal Verge reached retirement in August 2004, leaving the force Prefecture in the hands of inspector F. Xavier Vilaró i Camps.
The Guardia Urbana were significantly involved in the Universal Forum of Cultures in summer 2004, deployed and working for the first time in conjunction with the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Spanish National Police Force.
In October 2004, the 25th anniversary of the first women officers in the Guardia Urbana is commemorated.
In 2005, the Guardia Urbana carried out major police activities stemming from events that took place in the city: the accident in Carmel neighbourhood, the annual celebrations in Gràcia and Sants, the launch of the Drug Dependency Care Centre in Vall d’Hebron, and so on. Owing to the efficient way it dealt with these events and the endeavours undertaken, the Guardia Urbana conveyed an unsurpassable image of itself.
In November 2005, at a time when the Mossos d’Esquadra were being deployed in Barcelona city, constituting a further step on the road to a new police system strengthening propinquity policing, the Joint Command Centre for the Guardia Urbana, the Fire Department and the Mossos d’Esquadra was created.
2006 was marked by the launch of the new Civic-mindedness Ordinance, which, in addition to the positive progress in the deployment of the Mossos d’Esquadra, led the Guardia Urbana to increase its action in those tasks that are required the most by citizens.
Another major feature of 2006 for the Guardia Urbana was the substantial modernisation process: PDAs, GPS and the TETRA communication system, which have enabled direct communication between the Guardia Urbana and the Mossos d’Esquadra, are examples of the commitment being undertaken to new technologies.
In 1956, the Road Safety Education Service was launched. Celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of this service, which has undergone constant development, were held in the summer of 2006 at the Forum venue. More than 7000 children from various schools in the city took part in the event which sought to acknowledge the positive work carried out all year round by our road safety education monitors.
In Autumn 2006 celebrations were held marking the 150th anniversary of the Mounted Unit with a show on horseback taking place on La Rambla and a magnificent performance being given by the horsemen and horses at the Palau Sant Jordi. During the events, the citizens of Barcelona demonstrated their feelings of warmth towards this unit.
