The City Council and NGOs agree to co-ordinate joint projects in the reconstruction of Iraq

The City Council and 25 Catalan NGOs, in a meeting with representatives from both sides, have agreed on the creation of a committee to take charge of co-ordinating the projects and initiatives for co-operating in the effort to rebuild Iraq. The humanitarian programmes that come out of the city will be channelled through the United Nations, the organization which, in the opinion of Mayor Joan Clos, should take charge of co-ordinating the entire post-war reconstruction process in Iraq.

Likewise, the NGOs have agreed with the Council's idea to start initiatives for collaboration with other cities as a means of recovering the cultural relations damaged by the war. The NGOs have aid personnel and material waiting in Iraq as well as in Jordan, Iran, Turkey and Syria, from where they are ready to move as soon as they are allowed to enter Iraqi territory.

The participating NGOs are: ACNUR, Acció Solidària-Igman, Architects Without Borders, Assembly of Co-operation for Peace, Catalan Association for Peace, Càritas, Solidary Drivers of Catalonia, Red Cross of Catalonia, Cooperacció, Women for Women, Pharmacists Mundi, Catalan Federation of NGOs for Development, Autonomous Foundation for Solidarity, Josep Comaposada Foundation, Peace and Solidarity Foundation, Intermon-Oxfam, Mans Unides, Doctors for Bosnia, Doctors of the World, Doctors Without Borders, Món 3, Opticians for the World, Clowns Without Borders, PAUOC and Sodepau.
